Caffeine cops a lot of flak. Some say it poisons you, others say it is an addictive substance that will only lead to hardship. The term caffeine even gets thrown around like it’s a miracle substance, something that can cure your ailments faster than western medicine can. With caffeine infused weight loss products being the new fad.
Coffee is a natural product, with high quality coffee having ZERO ADDITIVES to it. You may hear flavor notes of RICH CHOCOLATE like our TALL DARK AND HANDSOME, or SWEET TOFFEE like our IL CARAMELLO. Rest assured that there is no chocolate or toffee in them, unlike energy bars or weight loss shakes. Energy bars claim to be packed with CAFFEINE and try to convince you that this is the ONLY way to burn those fats!
Whilst these bars show us people rock climbing upside down and having big pulsating muscles just by eating their product, is it the actual caffeine involved that shaves off the kilos?
The short answer: NO.
The sad reality is that the caffeine in your coffee (or in those bars for that matter) isn’t miraculously shortening waistlines across the world. What it IS doing however, is greatly improving your chances of weight loss and preparing your body to smash those goals yourself! Caffeine doesn’t MAKE you lose weight, it HELPS you lose weight.
Caffeine is one of the few substances known to help mobilize fats from your fat tissues and increase metabolism. Basically, the caffeine causes Adrenaline to travel through your blood straight to the fat tissues, signaling them to break down fats and release them into your blood.
Now, releasing fatty acids into your blood does not help you lose fat unless you are then burning more calories than you consume through your diet. Meaning, just because they are ready to be broken down it doesn’t mean that they ARE breaking down. Yes, your body is in a constant state of burning fats for energy and a higher metabolism means a high rate of fats being burnt for energy, these figures are so minuscule that you will NEVER see a physical result to your waistline through this alone.
There are studies showing that caffeine increases your resting metabolic rate by 3–11%, with larger doses having a greater effect! In the short term, this is great! After a while people build up a tolerance to the effects and it stops working. One study showed that caffeine increased fat burning by as much as 29% in lean people, while the increase was only about 10% in obese people. The effect also appears to decrease with age and is greater in younger individuals. You could argue that by drinking ROBUSTA coffee you are doubling your caffeine intake, therefore doubling your RMR (resting metabolic rate). Is this worth it? I would tend to stick with a high quality arabica for the taste, than to grimace through robusta coffee for a slight increase in my resting metabolic rate.
We all know that coffee and caffeine is a stimulant (that’s no secret) and if you have watched our video on Youtube IS COFFEE GOOD FOR YOU you will know that it is also a major mood booster. What caffeine actually does is inhibit the receptors responsible for tiredness. And by blocking the flow of adenosine, caffeine increases the firing of neurons and the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.
In fact, it may improve exercise performance by 11–12%, on average. There are plenty of instances where a long black or just a shot of espresso is used as a great pre workout. Caffeine sounds like its a miracle maker right now, in this case you are combining exercise with caffeine, and the coffee itself just giving you that BOOST to go and burn the fats yourself.
This isn’t the best form of weight loss, a lot of people can go down some pretty dangerous routes by not eating and while I always endorse having a great cup of coffee, it is not a replacement for actual food. Appetite suppression varies from person to person. With some studies saying caffeine had an appetite-reducing effect in men, but not in women, making them eat less at a meal following caffeine consumption. However, another study showed no effect for men. So really it is just a personal thing.
In a basic sense, it makes sense that having SOMETHING in your belly is better than having nothing. And downing a cup of coffee is a great way to fill that void whilst also counting those calories.
Let’s look at our Il Caramello coffee and how many calories are in it. A single espresso, 30ml of this delicious coffee will give you a staggering 2 calories! A single cup (250ml) of black coffee comes at a WHOPPING 4 calories! Most of you will add a dash of milk, and this bumps it up to around 15-20 calories a cup.
The caffeine is realistically doing nothing to your waistline, it is purely the lack of calories doing the work and the fact that you’re essentially starving yourself into a better weight isn’t my favorite method of weight loss. But hey, everyone is different and everyone has their own way of doing things, i would just err on the side of caution on this one.

So what have we learnt? We have learnt that caffeine ISN’T the miracle worker we have been led to believe. Caffeine does very little in the process of weight loss, however it does prep your body immensely to go and burn fat yourself through exercise.
Sadly there is no simple answer. There is no easy way to shave off the kilos whilst kicking back and enjoying some r&r. Everything is always about a fine balance between hard work and good preparation, and with a good cup of coffee doing so much good for your body, it is one of the best ways to help burn those fats and kick those goals.
